It’s Saturday morning I’ve got to be up at eight as I’m having a sofa collected, I’ve already been woken at 6am

by a very heavy thunderstorm. Yes it’s the sort of start to a saturday we all wish for not!,

I’d been looking forward to lie in all week. Then it all changed and I was glad I’d been forced to get out of bed. On my way downstairs to meet the removal men I noticed something moving in the communal porch to the flats. As I got closer I realized that a fox was lying there out of the rain. Immediately I felt a smile come across my face.

For those of you that don’t already know I live in central London and its only the second time in 4 years that I’ve come this close to a fox.

The last time was at 2am in a quite street of a very busy main road. As I was on my way home I’d noticed a fox on the opposite side of the street, the first thing I did was to stop and watch. As I was watching she looked up at me and started to cross the road. When I’ve seen them before they usually scarper! She continued walking towards me almost touching my shoes, looking up at me hoping I might have some food. I just stood there frozen to the spot as I didn’t want to scare her off, after a couple of minutes of she went on her merry way.

Back to this morning, so there he is a young looking fox sitting in the doorway. Suddenly I’m in a dilemma, I’ve got a removals van about to arrive but I want to spend time watching Mr Fox. Unfortunately the van arrived and scared him away. Even so just that minute of being in his presence was worth getting up for.

Later I went to take the recycling out to the bins and on my way back to the flat who should be sat outside the front door again, yes Rex the fox. Rex is the first name that came to mind, I know I’m not that creative. I’d got to within 5 metres of him, I stopped and didn’t move. He’d jump up as if he was going to run of again, I held my breath hoping he wouldn’t. After a tense minute he decided as long as I didn’t get any closer I wasn‘t going to be a threat. So he sat down and carried on washing himself, I stood there for about twenty minutes in his company not moving once.

Eventually he was disturbed as someone came towards the door and off he ran and I went back to my flat to make a coffee with a smile on my face. I thought to myself as I made my coffee that it had been a pity I didn’t have my camera with me, but then again you cant capture the feeling you get when a wild animal feels comfortable enough to let you spend some time with it in a picture.
