After a successful quarterly meeting in the Wildwood Education Centre on Saturday 7th October, a few of the members in attendance made a beeline for the coffee shop, followed by a leisurely stroll around the park itself!.....

The weather had been kind, with the morning being sunny, if a bit breezy while a number of members gathered in the hide at Stodmarsh, where a kingfisher did oblige with a couple of performances. Then, for the appointed time of high noon, most had arrived at the Education centre. There was only Yours Truly who managed to be a few minutes late!

The meeting (report to follow) was well attended and wrapped up not too long after 2pm, (although further discussions contined throughout the afternoon) but the main attraction was definitely going to be Badgers!

Coffee imbibed, the tramp round to the badger pen began after Nick (the Hobbs version, as we now have two) turned down Shirley's offer to turn her  (fake) fur lined jacket inside out and pose as Brock for him! A short stop at the Otter pool found the Mustelids well hidden and unwilling to play! With the exception of a rare trip round its aviary by a Raven, there was little else to slow down progress towards the main course!

Brett was already shooting when the coffee lovers arrived!
On arrival, those that had stopped at the cafeteria found Brett already well into his first card, as the targets in question were already out sniffing the air for what would be their breakfast and grooming each other in a way that occasionally turned into light hearted fisticuffs!

A good hour was spent photographing their antics as they and we waited for brekky to arrive. Jill was warned that she would get her foot stuck if she used the fence to improve her height ratio, but would she listen? The clatter was her camera going over the fence as she lost her balance, but fortunatelythe camera survived, as it was only the outer pailing fence and there was an amount of soft vegetation to save too much damage. (Oh yes, Jill was OK too!)

Grooming sometimes turned into light fisticuffs
As the badgers were fed, with their antics changing to the attitude of the pets that they are, we wandered around the rest of the circuit, saying goodbye to those who needed to get on the motorways to get home in time for their evenings entertainment near the entrance as the final few re-invaded the cafeteria. Having confused the staff for a second time as to how much coffee was actually required, we watched the little birds until time to go home!
